Pioneer Cemetery Regulations

Recognizing that space in Pioneer Cemetery is quite limited, KU Endowment in 1994 developed the following regulations for those who would be buried there.

  • University staff, defined as full-time faculty members or those serving in an unclassified equivalent administrative appointment at the time of retirement or death, and who served the university for at least 15 years.
  • Individuals who have given distinguished service to KU, including chancellors, vice chancellors and deans; KU Endowment trustees; and members of the KU Alumni Association Board of Directors.
  • The spouse of any eligible person.
  • All costs, such as cremation, inurnment and actual interment, as well as purchase and placement of markers, shall be borne by the families or estates of the deceased. KU Endowment provides plots to qualified individuals at no cost. The operation and maintenance is funded entirely by private donations.
