“The KU Women for KU Women Fund is so important. For a lot of us, it’s the difference between being able to finish school and not being able to finish school.”

Lindsey-Nunn, a divorced mother raising a teenage son, suffers from a serious seizure disorder that prevents her from working. Her limited income doesn’t always cover necessary living expenses. A gift from the KU Women for KU Women fund allowed her to fix her car, pay for her son’s trombone lessons and purchase a new computer monitor that, unlike older monitors, is less likely to trigger seizures.

KU Women 4 KU Women, an endowed fund, was established in 2005 by the advisory board of Women Philanthropists for KU to help women students who are KU seniors or graduate students with urgent, one-time, nonmedical financial expenses. Support from the fund at KU Endowment is distributed through the Emily Taylor Women’s Resource Center at KU.

For Lindsey-Nunn, the fund provided an economic boost. But just as importantly, she said, it reaffirmed her belief that what she was doing — working toward a college degree to better her life — was worth the sacrifice.

“Just knowing that this group of strong women is helping women like me drives me even harder to succeed,” she said.

The support also mirrors Lindsey-Nunn’s personal resolve to help women. She recently established a nonprofit organization to help empower women and children by providing access to educational and economic resources.
