At the Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Institute, researchers and educators study the life of the planet for the benefit of the Earth and its inhabitants. From dinosaurs in Wyoming and petrified trees in Antarctica to endangered frogs and birds in the Amazon and Asia, museum and institute staff discover and document the Earth’s fantastic biological diversity of plants and animals – both living and fossil.

Grand stories emerge from this research. Staff members use those stories to educate hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students, and to provide exhibits and hands-on science education to 25,000 school children and 50,000 visitors each year.

The institute leads the nation in biodiversity research and graduate student education. Its research collections of more than eight million plants and animals are an invaluable library of life. They serve science and society by allowing KU scientists to forecast the spread of invading pests, identify possible bioterror threats and track emerging diseases such as avian influenza and West Nile virus.

Every gift, small and large, can make a difference. A series of small gifts over time can grow into major support for student research, a child’s scholarship for museum activities, a new exhibit or an expedition to discover some of the 90 percent of plants and animals that are estimated to still be a mystery to science.

Major gifts can establish endowed funds, which can be named for you or for someone else. These funds provide financial support in perpetuity.

Our development staff will be happy to answer your questions and assist you in creating an endowed fund, setting up a planned gift or making another kind of gift. You can also use a credit card to make a gift online to provide:
