Thanks to a bill passed by the Kansas Legislature in 2008, donors can help meet the deferred maintenance needs of KU while receiving a 45 percent tax credit, in addition to any standard charitable deduction that may be available. Importantly, tax credits provide a dollar-for-dollar reduction in taxes owed. They differ from tax deductions, which reduce only the amount of taxable income.
Deferred maintenance work has been completed at Dyche, Haworth, Malott, Wescoe and Murphy Halls, the Spencer Art Museum and throughout the campus Utility Tunnel system, but important work still remains. We hope you will take advantage of this unique opportunity to help maintain KU’s historic buildings, to the benefit of the faculty, students and staff that utilize them every day.
Specific examples of deferred maintenance needs include heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, electrical, emergency systems, plumbing, windows, doors and removal of asbestos and other toxins, as well as work to achieve ADA compliance. Although the projects may not immediately be apparent to observers, they are crucial to maintaining the excellent learning environment KU has provided for generations of students.
How the Program Works
- The tax credit is available to individuals, nonprofit organizations and businesses paying Kansas individual and corporate income tax, insurance premium tax, and bank privilege tax;
- Qualified charitable gifts for deferred maintenance are eligible to receive a tax credit for 45 percent of the contribution amount;
- If the credit afforded to a taxpayer is in excess of his/her income tax liability, the remaining credit may be carried forward for up to three additional years and is therefore nonrefundable;
- Taxpayers taking advantage of the credit must file the appropriate Kansas tax return forms electronically;
- The credits conclude on Dec. 31, 2012.
How to Give
Eligible gifts must be made directly to the KU Endowment Association in the suggested minimum amount of $5,000. They may be given as cash, securities that can be easily converted to cash, and personal or real property that can be quickly converted to cash. Gifts must be received by KU Endowment or postmarked by December 31 of the year in which the donor seeks the tax credit.
