Danforth is back...
... and it’s bigger and better than ever! After taking a big hit in the microburst that hit Lawrence in March 2006 (and 60 years of wear and tear), the chapel was enlarged, renovated and refurbished. The project cost about $900,000. As with its original construction, private gifts paid for every aspect of the renovation project.
The chapel was rededicated Sept. 22, 2007. Read the media release
Highlights of the restoration and expansion:
- Chapel’s interior enlarged from about 1,350 to about 1,970 square feet.
- New construction, including a bride’s room (no more changing clothes in the Union!) and ADA compliant features.
- Interior work to restore the chapel to its original splendor.
- Outdoor work, including extensive new landscaping and accessible parking.
- Throughout, contractors took great care to ensure that new construction blended seamlessly with the original.
There’s still work to be done, and funding needs remain. Please consider the following giving opportunities.
- An anniversary gift - Particularly for those married in Danforth, consider a contribution for Danforth in celebration of your special day.
- Help complete the renovation - Funds are needed for organ repair ($20,000) and finishing and upgrades ($50,000).
- Contribute to the maintenance endowment fund and help keep Danforth looking its best for future generations.
