KU awards $29.6 million in scholarship support to students for 2008-09
More than 6,500 students at the University of Kansas will receive an estimated $29.6 million in privately funded scholarship support during the 2008-09 academic year. This represents a $1.9 million increase over the 2007-08 academic year, in which KU students received $27.7 million in scholarships, fellowships and awards.

New gifts benefit KU faculty in public administration and architectural engineering
Faculty at the University of Kansas made such a positive impression on Jerry Smith of Norman, Okla., that he and his wife, Lee, decided to give back. The Smiths have created a $30,000 faculty fund and a $10,000 gift annuity for the Department of Public Administration. They also established a $10,000 gift annuity for faculty development in architectural engineering.

KU Endowment to match 5,000th gift made online
Doubling a gift to the University of Kansas has never been easier. Nearly 5,000 online donations have been made to the university via KU Endowment. To celebrate this milestone, when a donor makes the 5,000th online gift at kuendowment.org, KU Endowment will match it up to $500. The match will support the same purpose as the donor’s designated gift.

Multi-million dollar grant to advance medical innovations in life sciences
The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation today announced an $8.1 million grant to the University of Kansas to establish the Institute for Advancing Medical Innovation, a unique life science proof-of-concept model that draws support from higher education, philanthropy and industry experts to move medical innovations from the lab to the market. To enhance the impact of the Kauffman Foundation’s support, the Kansas University Endowment Association will match the grant through contributions from other donors.

A $200,000 bequest from 1950 University of Kansas alumnus Frank Heckendorn honors a longtime KU professor and will benefit generations of KU women who study voice.

Garden city man plans estate gift for Marching Jayhawks
Distance is no barrier to Alan Riedel’s love for the Marching Jayhawks. The Garden City resident has no formal ties to the University of Kansas and lives 350 miles from Lawrence, but he’s such a great fan that he has made estate plans to leave $200,000 to the marching band’s endowment fund.

New KU scholarships will benefit students from Wyandotte County and Topeka
Grateful parents of two University of Kansas graduates have given $550,000 for two scholarships at KU. The scholarships will benefit engineering students from Wyandotte County and students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences from Topeka.

Philanthropist Annette Bloch makes historic $20 million gift to The University of Kansas Hospital Cancer Program
In what is believed to be the largest individual gift ever made to a hospital in the Kansas City area or the state of Kansas, philanthropist and civic leader Annette Bloch is donating $20 million to The University of Kansas Hospital cancer services.

Professors from KU’s School of Pharmacy and School of Nursing selected for Chancellors Club teaching and research awards
A School of Pharmacy professor and a School of Nursing researcher have been selected to receive the 2008 Chancellors Club award for their teaching and research at the University of Kansas. Val Stella and Carol Smith will be honored Oct. 24 at the annual Chancellors Club celebration. Each will receive a $6,000 award.

Wichita resident’s $1 million bequest will fund new fellowship at KU School of Medicine in Wichita or in Kansas City, Kan.
Lifelong Wichita resident Gwen Jager has made estate plans to leave about $1 million for a fellowship in internal medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita or in Kansas City, Kan. Jager’s late husband, Wichita physician Thor Jager, M.D., was renowned in the fields of pathology and internal medicine.

Couple's gift built lasting fund for political science scholarships
University of Kansas alumnus Frederic Gustafson created a lasting legacy in the field of aeronautics when he helped develop the helicopter. With his wife, Eleanor, he created a lasting legacy at KU by establishing a scholarship for political science undergraduates.

The University of Kansas Center for Telemedicine and Telehealth received a $40,000 gift from the Northwest Kansas Area Medical Foundation in Goodland. The gift will bring high-definition technology and support a new cutting-edge radiology service for the statewide telemedicine network.

Michelle Singletary, nationally syndicated columnist for The Washington Post, will speak at 12 p.m. Sept. 12 during the keynote event of Women Philanthropists for KU, at the Adams Alumni Center.

Scholarships created for American Studies and African and African-American studies
Generations of University of Kansas students will benefit from two $10,000 endowed scholarships established in memory of former KU professor Chico Herbison’s parents. The John S. and Yoshino Harmon scholarships will benefit humanities multicultural scholars majoring in African and African-American Studies, as well as students majoring in American Studies. They were established by Herbison and his sister, Tonya Farmer.

Health care grants support services for residents of Kansas City, Kan.
Grants to the University of Kansas from the REACH Healthcare Foundation will help provide mental health services and medical care in Kansas City, Kan. The grants, which total $215,045, help support two Kansas City, Kan., programs —Youth Success and Silver City Health Center. The grants were made to KU Endowment.

The University of Kansas has received a donation to create a lecture series at the Higuchi Biosciences Center that will allow KU scientists to share the latest research on neurological and neurodegenerative disorders.

University of Kansas piano students today and tomorrow will benefit from a new scholarship established by William Dann. The scholarship honors Richard Angeletti, professor emeritus of piano who taught at KU from 1960 until 1999.

Chemistry scholarship established for women doctoral students
On his 80th birthday, University of Kansas alumnus Thomas Milne and his family established a $30,000 endowed scholarship. The Thomas A. Milne Endowed Chemistry Scholarship will provide scholarship support to KU women who are studying for doctoral degrees in chemistry.

Student ticket endowment fund named for longtime theatre professor
A new Student Ticket Endowment Fund for the University Theatre at the University of Kansas is being named for Jack B. Wright, longtime professor of theatre and film. Income from the fund will give students at KU and Haskell Indian Nations University the opportunity to see University Theatre productions.

Nutritionist invested with inaugural Rice Professorship at KU Medical Center
Professor Susan Carlson, Ph.D., was invested April 29, with a professorship established by a gift from the estate of A.J. Rice of Graham County, Kan. The professorship will help support her research on docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid found in high concentrations in the brain and retina.

Assistant Professor Thomas Schulz, M.D. was invested today with a professorship to boost cancer research and treatment at the Wichita campus of the KU School of Medicine. The professorship was established by a $1 million gift from Frank and Beverly Gaines, of Hamilton, Kan.

Scholarship honors former KU professor of education
In the prime of his life, Gordon Alley’s career was cut short. On an autumn morning in 1982, as the 49-year-old University of Kansas professor of special education was riding his motorized scooter to work, a car hit him. Alley, who had taught at KU since 1970, suffered head injuries. He lived another 14 years but never was able to return to work.

Former U.S. Senator Bob Dole, a 52-year Kansas Mason of Russell Lodge #177, has been a long-standing financial supporter of the Kansas Masonic Foundation or KMF. Last December, Senator Dole notified the Foundation of his desire to support the Partnership for Life Campaign, giving $150,000 to create a prostate cancer research fund at the University of Kansas Cancer Center.
