Urological oncologist honored with professorship

A physician with a growing reputation for clinical research in the field of urologic oncology has been invested with a new professorship named for a longtime faculty member at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

KU awarded urologist Jeffrey Holzbeierlein, M.D., with the John W. Weigel Professorship in Urology at a ceremony today. Holzbeierlein is an assistant professor in the Urology Department at the KU Medical Center.

“Dr. Holzbeierlein not only has an innovative mind as a researcher, but he’s a great teacher, and one of the best clinicians around,” said Barbara Atkinson, M.D., executive vice chancellor of the KU Medical Center and executive dean of the KU School of Medicine. “He is a true physician-scientist.”

Dr. Holzbeierlein joined the staff at KU in 2002, and quickly brought in NIH funding for several research trials.

Atkinson told attendees at the ceremony that the professorship was one of nearly 50 endowed professorships at the Medical Center. These positions have long helped the university retain exemplary faculty members, she said.

Several donors gave to KU Endowment to establish the John W. Weigel Professorship in Urology. The professorship honors John W. Weigel, M.D., a cornerstone in the Urology Department who provided the lead gift for the professorship in his name. In May 2002, Dr. Weigel was honored with the Gold Cane Award from the American Urological Association, an honor presented annually to a senior urologist for outstanding contributions to the field.

The endowment to fund the professorship is managed by KU Endowment, the official fundraising and fund-management foundation for the University of Kansas. Founded in 1891, KU Endowment is the first foundation of its kind at a U.S. public university.
