Kansas car tag creates new avenue for KU Cancer Center funding

A new Kansas license plate will lead to increased proceeds for breast cancer research and outreach.

Last month, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed Senate Bill 198 into law, authorizing the issuance of breast cancer license plates featuring a pink ribbon, sunflower and the words, “Driven to Cure.”

Royalties from the sale of the plates will go to the KU Cancer Center to support a statewide coordinator for the Midwest Cancer Alliance. This coordinator will serve as a liaison between the cancer center and hospitals, physicians and clinics across the state to ensure that the latest information on cancer prevention and treatment is being shared with cancer care professionals and patients throughout Kansas.

Greg Thomas, cancer survivor and professor and chair ofthe University of Kansas Department of Design, designed the new license plate. The cost for the special car tag will be a minimum contribution of $25 on top of regular vehicle registration, tagging and licensing fees.

In addition to supporting the Midwest Cancer Alliance, funds raised from the specialty plates will help the University of Kansas Cancer Center obtain National Cancer Institute designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. The bill is effective Jan. 1, 2008, and these specialty plates could be available to the public shortly thereafter.
