Scholarship will help KU students travel abroad to study western civilization
A recent gift will support study abroad by humanities and western civilization students and honor a longtime director of the western civilization program at the University of Kansas.

KU awards $26 million in scholarship support to students for 2007-08
More than 5,400 students at the University of Kansas will receive about $26 million in privately funded scholarship support during the 2007-08 academic year. This is a 10.6 percent increase from the 2006-07 school year, in which KU students received $24.3 million in scholarship support.

Scholarship established in memory of KU student who died in apartment fire
On what would have been her daughter’s 22nd birthday, Nancy Bingham signed two memorable papers: The first one authorized her daughter’s cremation, the second one established a scholarship in her memory.

Three KU faculty members have been named Chancellors Club Teaching Professors. They are Helen Alexander, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology; Amy Devitt, professor of English; and Alice Lieberman, professor of social welfare.

Kansas Masonic Cancer Research Institute receives $300,000 for endowed professorship
Kansas Masonic Foundation members had no problem finding a way to honor their late board member John Wolf — they gave $300,000 to establish and fully endow the John P. Wolf Masonic Professorship in Urology.

Record number of donors give $94.3 million to KU
A record number of University of Kansas alumni and friends — 43,400 — contributed to KU Endowment during fiscal year 2007, up from 41,085 in 2006.

KU debate team celebrates national ranking, $1 million endowment
KU’s debate team, ranked in October as No. 1 in the nation, has an additional cause to celebrate. Alumni of KU’s debate team have raised a $1 million endowment to support the squad.

Land reserve will buffer important tallgrass prairie near Lawrence
Thanks to private donors, a piece of Douglas County’s ecological treasure will be protected for future generations. The 160-acre Suzanne Ecke McColl Nature Reserve was dedicated on Saturday by University of Kansas Chancellor Robert E. Hemenway. The land will be part of KU’s Field Station and Ecological Reserves, three miles north of Lawrence.

Danforth Chapel reopens to new splendor
A storm blew through the KU campus in March of 2006, destroying the roof of Danforth Chapel. Ironically, the Kansas winds led to a restoration and expansion of the beloved campus building.
On Saturday, Sept. 22, Chancellor Robert E. Hemenway led a re-dedication ceremony to commemorate the completed project, followed by an open house.

KU formally announces new gift created for maintenance of new scholarship hall
A $400,000 gift from KU alumnus Carl Krehbiel will endow a permanent maintenance fund for the Floyd H. and Katherine Krehbiel Scholarship Hall. KU Chancellor Robert E. Hemenway formally made the announcement Saturday during an event at the Dennis E. Rieger Hall.

Callahan Creek Presents $25,000 Scholarship Gift to KU Endowment
Callahan Creek, the Lawrence-based marketing communications agency, presented two University of Kansas students with scholarships of $2,500 each as part of its 25th anniversary. The award ceremony ended a program that featured two top-level Anheuser-Busch executives speaking to the audience about “Marketing To The New Consumer.”

KU professor emeritus Richard Schiefelbusch and his wife, Ruth, have given $50,000 to KU Endowment to establish a charitable gift annuity for KU. Half of the funds will go to KU’s speech and hearing clinic, and half will support pilot research.

Kansas car tags create new avenue for KU Cancer Center funding
A new Kansas license plate will lead to increased proceeds for breast cancer research and outreach. In April 2007, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed Senate Bill 198 into law, authorizing the issuance of breast cancer license plates featuring a pink ribbon, sunflower and the words, “Driven to Cure.”

KU Medical Center invests nurse with groundbreaking professorship
In a historic first, a nursing professor has been invested with an endowed professorship at the University of Kansas School of Nursing. The Christine A. Hartley Centennial Professorship, the first such professorship for the School of Nursing, was funded with a $500,000 gift from alumna Christine Hartley and her husband, Ross Hartley, to celebrate the school’s 100th anniversary in 2006.

KU dedicates Wilna Crawford Community Center
Thanks to the generosity of friends and alumni, a 115-year-old house near the University of Kansas has a new start. The two-story white frame home just east of campus is picturesque with wooden shutters, an old-fashioned porch swing, a fountain, an expansive stone patio and a meticulously landscaped lawn.
