Radiology Professors Honored at KU Medical Center

A longtime professor of radiology and chair of the Department of Radiology at the University of Kansas Medical Center was formally invested today with a professorship.

Stanton J. Rosenthal, M.D., was named the Arch W. Templeton Professor in Radiology at a ceremony attended by family, friends and colleagues at the KU School of Nursing auditorium. In addition, his predecessor, Solomon Batnitzky, M.D., was honored as the first Arch W. Templeton Professor in Radiology.

"Both men are distinguished by their records as researchers and educators," said Barbara Atkinson, M.D., executive vice chancellor of the KU Medical Center and executive dean of the KU School of Medicine. "We are fortunate to have faculty of such caliber."

Rosenthal, professor and chair of radiology, earned a bachelor's degree in 1967 and a medical degree in 1971, both from KU. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology in 1977 at the KU Medical Center, where he was chief resident from 1976 to 1977. He has held various leadership positions in local and national radiology societies and received numerous awards for his expertise in radiology. He was named chair of the Department of Radiology in July 2005, succeeding Batnitzky.

Batnitzky, professor of radiology and neurosurgery, earned his medical degree and completed his postgraduate training in diagnostic radiology at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was the Arch W. Templeton Professor in Radiology and chair of the Department of Radiology from 1997 to 2003. During his term as chair, Batnitzky helped develop the department's premier reputation in academics and research, particularly in neuroradiology, a topic on which he has written two textbooks and numerous scientific articles.

The Arch W. Templeton Professorship in Radiology Fund is one of 41 endowed professorship funds established for the KU Medical Center by private donors. The Templeton professorship honors outstanding faculty members at the School of Medicine who build on the prestige of the radiology program. It is named for Arch W. Templeton, M.D., chair of Department of Radiology from 1967 to 1992. Through his gift and the gifts of others to KU Endowment, Templeton spearheaded the creation of the professorship.

KU Endowment is an independent, nonprofit organization serving as the official fund-raising and fund-management organization for the University of Kansas. Founded in 1891, KU Endowment is the first foundation of its kind at a U.S. public university.
