A $5 million gift has created a scholarship program to help students with financial need attend the University of Kansas. Known as the Christina M. Hixson Opportunity Awards, the scholarship program will offer $5,000 scholarships to qualifying students from across Kansas.

Sidney Hahn Culver was near retirement when she chanced to meet the sonorous cello she recently gave to the University of Kansas. The sound of the instrument -- now valued at more than $100,000 -- took her breath away in 1985. Someday the cello will ease the financial hardships of KU music students.

$2 Million to Fund Geriatric Training for Doctors    
The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation has awarded KU Endowment a $2 million grant to support geriatric medical education at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. The grant will help fund the new Kansas Reynolds Program in Aging based at the Landon Center on Aging.

Getty Funds Plan for Historic KU Buildings    
A $130,000 grant from the Getty Foundation, a program of the J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles, will help the University of Kansas create a preservation master plan to guide future preservation and development on the historic campus.

Alumnus Pledges $500,000 for Business Faculty   
Before the KU School of Business can attract the top students, the school must have the means to encourage the best business teachers and researchers, said Stanley Porter, business ’41. That’s why Porter, a retired partner of Ernst & Young, recently committed a total of $500,000 for funds for KU business faculty members.

The University of Kansas and Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics are joining forces to counter the growing obesity epidemic by developing a cutting-edge obesity research, treatment and community outreach center. Obesity now afflicts 24.3 percent of all Kansas children and 32 percent of all Missouri children.

Million Dollar Talkers    
KU's student superheroes are connecting with alumni and bringing in millions for scholarships for their fellow students and other programs at KU. Last fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2005, the students raised $1.01 million by calling KU alumni. So far this fiscal year, they have raised $1.5 million in pledges.

Exercise Program for Diabetes Patients Provides
Fun & Hope
   
It's 7:15 a.m. at the University of Kansas Medical Center, and Kay Sweeney is preparing to participate in an exercise class designed for patients with diabetes. But first, a health-care professional overseeing the session monitors her vital signs: Sweeney's pulse, blood pressure, blood-sugar and blood-oxygen levels. Sweeney has type 2 diabetes and monitoring these signs will help determine the intensity of exercise or whether she should be exerting herself at all.

However, KU’s Roy Jensen, M.D., envisions a future where everyone in Quinter will be able to stay close to home to get state-of-the-art care Jensen is working to create a comprehensive cancer center based at KU that could someday reach out to people in rural communities.
