Woodwinds Scholarship Honors Retired Professor

University of Kansas fine arts students will have an opportunity to pursue their woodwind dreams thanks to a new scholarship fund at the Kansas University Endowment Association.

The L. Don Scheid Woodwinds Scholarship Fund has been established with a gift of more than $30,000 from Denver resident Steven L. Scheid and matching support from the Denver-based Janus Capital Group. He is chairman and chief executive officer at the company.

Steve Scheid established the scholarship fund in honor of his father's 80th birthday. He said his father imparted a love of music to hundreds of students during his 30 years at KU, where he was a clarinet professor and associate dean of the School of Fine Arts. Don Scheid, who retired in 1990, and his wife, Marian, reside in Lawrence, Kan.

Steve Hedden, fine arts dean, was a student of Don Scheid.
"I had the privilege of taking clarinet lessons from Don before I began my high school teaching career, so I know firsthand that he always challenged his students to do more than they believed they could do," Hedden said. "This scholarship will make certain that his legacy continues. The school is deeply grateful to Steve Scheid for his generous gift in honor of his father."

The gift will be administered by the KU Endowment Association, an independent, nonprofit organization serving as the official fund-management foundation for the University of Kansas. Founded in 1891, the KU Endowment Association is the oldest foundation of its type at a public university in the United States and one of the largest.
