An alumnus of Clay Center Community High School has added more than $55,800 to a scholarship for Clay Center students who want to study business at the University of Kansas.
The gift from Richard L. Hofmann, a 1937 Clay Center graduate and resident of Lincoln, Neb., brought the total for the Richard L. Hofmann Scholarship to almost $80,000. Hofmann established the scholarship with a gift of $25,000 to KU Endowment in 2001. The scholarship is awarded to business students who graduated from Clay Center Community High School. Preference is given to students who are in the Division of Accounting and Information Systems in the KU School of Business.
After Hofmann graduated from high school, he served in the Air Force and earned the rank of staff sergeant. During World War II, he was stationed in Sicily and mainland Italy. He also served in England during the Korean War.
In 1951, with support from the GI bill, he attended KU, graduating in 1955 with a degree in business. Hofmann’s career has included employment with Maytag Corporation in Newton, Iowa. There he met and married his late wife, Beulah Still Hofmann. In 1959, he purchased a Midas auto service franchise in Lincoln, Neb., that became one of the company’s most successful locations. He retired in 1983.
KU Endowment is an independent, non-profit organization serving as the official fund-raising and fund-management organization for the University of Kansas. Founded in 1891, KU Endowment is the first foundation of its kind at a U.S. public university and one of the largest.
