Some African-, Hispanic-, Asian- and Native-American students, Pell Grant recipients, and first-generation college students face unique challenges. Statistically, these students could be less likely to succeed than their counterparts who are not of color or economically disadvantaged. KU’s Multicultural Scholars Programs (MSPs) are designed to help these students succeed.

And succeed they do. MSP students consistently earn higher grades — and a larger proportion of them earn degrees — than KU’s general undergraduate population. These young people become leaders and catalysts for change in their communities.

KU’s first MSP began in the School of Business in 1992 as an innovative, unique program. After 15 years, more than 10 MSP programs at KU and Kansas community colleges have assisted nearly 250 high-achieving students.

Each MSP is led by faculty directors or co-directors who commit time, expertise and care to their MSP students. One student calls the directors “…some of the hardest-working members of the faculty, who will stop at nothing to ensure success for each and every student.” Students attend regular individual meetings with faculty directors and join with larger groups of MSP students at least once a month to attend arts events, dinners and business meetings. Students also may receive scholarships to reduce the burden of working while trying to maintain a rigorous course load.

Financial support is critical to the Multicultural Scholars Programs, and gifts designated for scholarships are especially beneficial. A donor has agreed to match $1 for every $2 given, up to $10,000 per program, during the 2007-2008 academic year. The same donor has committed to fully match any gifts made by MSP alumni, up to $2,000 per program. Please help by joining the group of committed MSP donors who have made an enormous difference in the lives of many young people.
